“Responsible Artificial Intelligence”

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an essential engine for innovation and economic growth, and provides new opportunities for scientific discovery in almost every domain. However, realizing AI's positive and transformative potential requires a trans-disciplinary approach that ensures AI research and development (R&D) progress responsibly. In this talk, I will discuss the importance of democratizing AI R&D—including access to advanced cyber infrastructure—to achieve the goal of responsible AI. I will then introduce the University of Utah's One-U Responsible AI Initiative, which aims to catalyze an innovation ecosystem at the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute to enable responsible, trans-disciplinary AI development and use for societal impact in the areas of environment, health, and education.

Penny Atkins, PhD, is the director of research and science at the Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute and supports One-U RAI. Prior to taking this role, she was the associate director of the One Utah Data Science Hub, which connects the Data Exploration and Learning for Precision Health Intelligence (DELPHI) Initiative, the Data Science and Ethics of Technology (DATASET) Initiative, and the Utah Data Science Center to expand data science research, education, outreach, infrastructure, and datasets at the University of Utah.

Penny completed her BS in Industrial Engineering at Montana State University prior to working at the Idaho National Lab for four years. Penny then received her PhD in Bio-engineering from the University of Utah and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at ETH Zurich before returning to the University of Utah as a research associate at the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute.
