Brain Controlled Devices with ARCS Scholar Caden Hamrick

11:45 AM – 1:30 PM MT
85 Medical Dr N
Salt Lake City, UT 84132
United States
ARCS Members, Scholar and Friends are cordially invited to attend our May meeting:

Brain Controlled Devices
with
Caden Hamrick, ARCS Scholar 2024-25

Caden Hamrick will be leading a tour of the lab where they work on brain controlled devices. Caden and other researchers at the University of Utah are advancing brain-controlled prosthetics to help people with neuromuscular impairments by combining robotics and neural engineering. This work uses wearable and implantable interfaces to restore function. Hamrick’s research builds on this, improving noninvasive devices by applying insights from advanced implanted systems to those that don’t require surgery. This could make high-quality assistive devices more accessible. As Hamrick notes, “more people could have access to higher-quality assistive devices without necessarily requiring surgery.”

We will meet at the Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital, 85 Medical Dr N, Salt Lake City, UT 84132.  Please plan to be at the hospital by 11:45 so that we can start the tour at noon.  The hospital has no parking, but provides a free valet service.  Here are the directions for accessing the valet:

  1. Travel North: From North Medical Drive, continue past the main University Hospital entrance.
  2. Stay Right: Keep in the right lane toward the Clinical Neurosciences Center.
  3. Approach Entrance: Pass the Neurosciences building; the Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital will be ahead on your right.
  4. Drop-off: Pull up directly to the front of the building to be greeted by a parking ambassador.

Once inside the building, we will meet Caden in the lobby where he will meet us and start the tour.  After the tour which should take 30 to 45 minutes we will eat as a group in the hospital cafeteria (self-pay) with opportunity to network with ARCS Members and Scholars.
