"The AI Will See You Now"

What does it take to turn a sketch on a napkin into technology that saves people's sight? This talk follows that path, from a simple idea to a commercial product now helping protect vision for people with wet macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness in older adults.

The story continues at the University of Utah, where data and artificial intelligence are being used to build new tools that help doctors decide who needs care most urgently and how best to treat them. The goal is better outcomes for patients and, surprisingly, more human doctors.

Despite the title, this is not a story about machines replacing physicians. It is about a partnership. AI does what it does best: it combines information from thousands of patients, spots patterns, and puts clear, useful insights at the doctor's fingertips when they need them. That frees doctors to do what they do best: listen, explain, comfort, and make decisions together with their patients.

Dr. Adam Dubis will be our speaker at the November meeting. Dr. Dubis used his engineering background to commercialize several analytical tools and methods for ophthalmology while earning his PhD at the Medical College of Wisconsin.  After moving to London in 2013, he continued his enterprise activities, consulting for several start-ups and commercializing health analytics through patent filings and spin-out companies. He also developed two master’s-level courses aimed at enabling biomedical idea generators to take their ideas to market.

He joined the research faculty at the John A. Moran Eye Center in 2024 and continues teaching activities within the University of Utah Biomedical Engineering BioInnovate Program.

Lunch will be served, so please register for the event.

Please note the earlier time for this meeting.  Come at 11:00 a.m. for networking, lunch and program at 11:30 a.m.
