A Word From Our University Partners
College of Engineering
Dean Richard B Brown of the University of Utah College of Engineering knows the importance of attracting the best and brightest students to engineering and other scientific disciplines. “We really will make a difference in the world,” Brown said. “We attract students who have the drive, imagination, diligence and intelligence and give them an education that will prepare them to make a huge contribution to solving the world’s important problems.”
During the beginning years of ARCS Foundation Utah, Dean Brown and his staff provided phenomenal support to the organization by hosting many of the events and providing additional support to ARCS Scholars. He also presented Outstanding Service Awards to Judith Miller and Cecelia Foxley at the 2009 College of Engineering Convocation. In his presentation he said, “This year, we are honored to recognize two amazing individuals who have devoted months of volunteer effort to establish Utah’s first Chapter of Achievement Rewards for College Scientists, called ‘ARCS Foundation.’ ARCS Foundation is a women’s volunteer organization that helps both young women and men to achieve their educational aspirations. Their focus in Utah is on encouraging and rewarding the best and brightest students to pursue graduate degrees in engineering, science and medicine.”
John A. Moran Eye Center
Each year, the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Foundation awards $15,000 to a first-year resident at the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah to seed promising research. Moran then matches the award for the following two years of residency, providing a total of $45,000 for a young researcher. Moran residents receive protected research time one-half day each week.
“Without the ARCS scholarship, residents would have to put their research on hold,” said Randall J Olson, MD, CEO of the Moran Eye Center. “At Moran, we believe that hope in medicine lies in future innovation, in the passion of young researchers. It is an honor to partner with an organization like ARCS that shares our vision.”
An ARCS Foundation Utah Scholar Award is a prestigious, unrestricted award of $15,000 that provides an essential tool for recruiting and retaining top students to the University of Utah College of Engineering and the University of Utah School of Medicine John A. Moran Eye Center. This award qualifies recipients for other funding for their full PhD program.
As of Fall 2018, the total funding to this important effort by the Utah Chapter is $15,000 each to 31 scholars.
