Rebekah Gensure, Utah ARCS Scholar, recently presented her work a the ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology) conference in Hawaii.  Rebekah is in her second year of ophthalmology residency at the Moran Eye Center. Using the fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO) system, Dr. Gensure has been working with Dr. Paul Bernstein, MD, PhD, to identified patterns associated with macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel)—a notoriously difficult-to-diagnose hereditary disease that causes central vision loss, as well as retinitis pigmentosa, another hereditary cause of vision loss (especially night vision). Dr. Gensure has undertaken systematic control studies to characterize fluorescence decay properties of the common macular carotenoids and is currently investigating the effects of the natural lens vs. intraocular implants on FLIO measurements. Her ARCS scholarship funds, which have already supported much-needed laboratory supplies and computer equipment, enabled her to present the team's findings at the ARVO conference in Hawaii. This work is now published in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.
