Jan Kubanek on Noninvasive Precision Therapies of the Brain

Posted on Tuesday, January 14, 2025

ARCS Members attended a presentation January 14, 2025 by Dr. Jan Kubanek on a device his lab has developed that has incredible potential to modulate symptoms of chronic pain, depression and essential tremor.  The device called the Diadem is currently in phase 2 clinical trials.  The anecdotes Dr. Kubanek shared of patients having immediate improvement in symtoms with a single 40 minute treatment were impressive, including depression patients that became animated, pain patients that received immediate relief.  He showed a video of an essential tremor patient where the hand tremor slowed and almost stopped.  These effects can last for days and even weeks.  Phase 3 clinical trials will consist of 4 treatments and it is hoped that the effects will be cumulative and longer lasting.  Jan is also founder of SPIRE Therapeutic, a University of Utah Technology Transfer Company.  This is the company that is commercializing Diadem and running the clinical trials.  Last year SPIRE won the  2024 Wilson Sonsini Entrepreneur & Investor Life Science Summit Pitch Competition at the annual Utah Entrepreneur and Investor Summit and Dr. Kubanek received the University of Utah Founder of the Year Award.   Those interested in clinical trials can check at the company website for details of what studies are underway and how to sign up for future trials.
