ARCS Members and guests were able to tour the University of Utah Nuclear Reactor. This is a unique resource on campus and is used extensively for student and faculty research. The tour was given by Andrew Allison who has a background in the Navy nuclear program and is currently the Ractor Supervisor. Following the tour, members, guests and additional students and faculty attended a presentation by Dr. Tara Mastren, Assistant Professor of Nuclear Engineering. Dr. Glenn Sjoden, Energy Solutions Presidential endowed Chair and Director, Nuclear Engineering Program in the Civil Engineering Department gave an overview of the department and introduced Dr. Mastren. Dr. Mastren presented a seminar on "The Production and Application of Radionuclides for Targeted Radiotherapy".
Dr. Mastren focuses her research in Nuclear Medicine specifically Targeted Radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer and Alzheimers. She also works on lanthanide and actinide chemistry and isotope production. Read an interesting article about her work in nuclear medicine here.
